DUKE OF YORK ISLAND, Papua New Guinea (July 9, 2015) U.S. Army Lt. Col. Howard Gobble, veterinarian, obtains skin samples, to diagnose possible skin infection and parasites from a herd of water buffalo during Pacific Partnership. Howard and his veterinary team assigned to the hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) were on the island to check the water buffalo for different diseases that could be contributing to the health of the population. The villagers rely on the water buffalo to bring crops such as coconuts down from the surrounding hills and are essential to their daily life. Mercy is at its second mission port for Pacific Partnership 2015. Pacific Partnership is in its tenth iteration and is the largest annual multilateral humanitarian assistance and disaster relief preparedness mission conducted in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. While training for crisis conditions, Pacific Partnership missions to date have provided real world medical care to approximately 270,000 patients and veterinary services to more than 38,000 animals. Additionally, the mission has provided critical infrastructure development to host nations through more than 180 engineering projects. (U.S. Navy photo by Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Dustin Laxton)
