Miguela Castro, Honduras Aguan villager and evangelical church pastor, is in charge of the maintenance and operation of the water purification system and current well site in Honduras Aguan, Honduras, July 7, 2015. The well, drilled two years ago by an non-governmental organization, taps into the first aquifer which is contaminated, but purifies the water before residents drink it. This well can only produce a few hundred gallons of water a day while the new well, being produced as part of the New Horizons Honduras 2015 training exercise, will be able to output 35,000-45,000 gallons of water a day. The well is one of multiple projects going on in and around Trujillo as part of New Horizons. New Horizons was launched in the 1980s and is an annual joint humanitarian assistance exercise that U.S. Southern Command conducts with a partner nation in Central America, South America or the Caribbean. The exercise improves joint training readiness of U.S. and partner nation civil engineers, medical professionals and support personnel through humanitarian assistance activities.
