Tanis Toland, of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Sacramento District's Planning Office, takes the lead during a drum circle at the "A Hand Out For Hope" event in downtown Sacramento, Aug. 8. Toland drew spectators by weaving African rhythms into her drum work. The event was set up by Staging A Miracle, a community outreach program that provides a safe haven for troubled families. Through her music and performances, Toland tries to convey the message that miracles do happen and small deeds such as reaching out to others can really change lives. The event was presented at the First United Methodist Church in downtown Sacramento as part of the city's monthly Second Saturday arts celebration.
