Byers is an infantryman assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Heavy Brigade Combat Team. Byers, who works for the State of Virginia Department of Probation and Parole, volunteered to deploy with the North Carolina National Guard.
