Sergeant Joseph W. Martin, the assault section leader for Lima Company, Battalion Landing Team 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, takes a “selfie” on top of Mount Mitchell, N.C., in 2013 with his wife, Nicole. Martin overcame a number of obstacles in his life in and out of the Marine Corps, and is now fighting to stay in the Marine Corps. Martin is currently deployed with the 24th MEU, embarked on the ships of the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group, and deployed to maintain regional security in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.
