Elizabeth Berry shows Soldiers from the 189th Military Police Co. at U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, July 15, a photograph of her brother, Capt. William F. Burke Jr., a firefighter from Engine 21 who died when the north tower of the World Trade Center collapsed. Berry and her sister, Janet Roy, were part of a group of Sept. 11, 2001, victim family members who asked to meet the Joint Task Force guards – just to say, "thank you" – when the group was here for the recent military commissions proceedings. JTF Guantanamo conducts safe, humane, legal and transparent care and custody of detainees, including those convicted by military commission and those ordered released by a court. The JTF conducts intelligence collection, analysis and dissemination for the protection of detainees and personnel working in JTF Guantanamo facilities and in support of the War on Terror. JTF Guantanamo provides support to the Office of Military Commissions, to law enforcement and to war crimes investigations. The JTF conducts planning for and, on order, responds to Caribbean mass migration operations.
