    U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Pernell Clark, of Hampton, Va., a damage controlman aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Legare fabricates a helicopter hangar door latch in the damage control shop of the cutter July, 20. Damage controlman are assigned to cutters and shore units and are responsible for watertight integrity, emergency equipment associated with firefighting and flooding, plumbing repairs, welding fabrication and repairs, and chemical, biological and nuclear-warfare detection and decontamination.The Legare, home ported in Portsmouth, Va., is currently deployed to countries off the west and central coast of Africa in support of the Africa Partnership Station, under the direction of Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa, 6th Fleet. APS achieves common maritime safety and security goals through partnership and collaboration.
