Rct. Nick Desouza, Platoon 1045, Bravo Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, switches positions on a Confidence Course obstacle March 24, 2015, on Parris Island, S.C. This obstacle requires recruits to slide across a rope in three different positions without falling into the pond beneath. Desouza, 18, from Yarmouth, Mass., is scheduled to graduate May 29, 2015. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
