Major Mike Goodwin, performs a walk-around inspection of one of the four turbofan engines of a KC-135R Stratotanker at a deployed location in Southwest Asia. He is assigned to the 911th Air Refueling Squadron, Grand Forks Air Force Base, N.D.. The engines are CFM International CFM-56 turbofan engines, each producing 21,634 pounds of thrust. This 12 April 2006 mission supported Operation Mountain Lion, over the mountains and high desert of Afghanistan. U.S. Air Force F-15s, A-10s and B-52s are providing close-air support to troops on the ground engaged in rooting out insurgent sanctuaries and support networks. Royal Air Force GR-7s also are providing close-air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces. U.S. Air Force Global Hawk and Predator aircraft are providing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, while KC-135 and KC-10 aircraft are providing refueling support.
