Linwood “Tick” Thumm smiles for the camera March 11, 2015, at his home in Norfolk, Va. Ninety-nine-year-old Thumm was a Coast Guard officer in command of an 83-foot cutter that saw action off the Mid-Atlantic coast of the United States, before being deployed to the Philippines in anticipation of an invasion of Japan.
