Lt. Col. The hike was the capstone event of the squadron’s biannual Leonidas Award competition, which pitted Marines from the squadron’s three companies against one another for a place in MWCS-28 history. The Leonidas Award serves to build camaraderie and esprit de corps within the noncommissioned officer and junior ranks of the squadron. Macias is the squadron’s commanding officer, and a native of Queens, N.Y.
