A military cemetery covered in snow features a prominent granite headstone numbered 51543 in the foreground. The headstone bears a bronze relief plaque depicting the iconic Iwo Jima flag-raising scene, with a partial inscription visible at the bottom referencing 'God and His Country' and 'our flag.' Small stones have been placed on top of the headstone, following the Jewish memorial tradition, and rows of uniform white headstones extend into the background.

The headstone of Rene Gagnon, who died Oct. 12, 1979, is located in Section 51 in Arlington National Cemetery. Gagnon is best known for being one of the six men depicted in Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal’s Pulitzer Prize winning photo of a Sailor and Marines raising an American flag during the Battle for Iwo Jima. The Rosenthal photograph’s depiction became a basis for a statue honoring all U.S. Marines at the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington. (Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall PAO photo by Rachel Larue)
