Sgt. Steve B. Gomez (left) supports Cpl. Ty J. Pruitt as he removes a rope harness he used to rappel moments earlier Feb. 11 on Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan during the helicopter rope suspension training course. Gomez’s role during Pruitt’s rappel was to observe him as he descended and ensure he was safe, and help him exit the rappel area so another Marine who was rappelling would not land on top of him. As the safety observer during Pruitt’s rappel, Gomez would be prepared to catch the slack rope in the event Pruitt lost his grip and was freefalling towards the ground, which would halt his freefall. Gomez, a Long Beach, California native, is a reconnaissance man with 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force. Pruitt is a reconnaissance man with the battalion. (U.S Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Matt S. Myers/Released)
