U.S. Air Force SSgt Casey Crate was born in Spanaway, Wash., June 5, 1978. He graduated from Spanaway Lake High School in 1996. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Air Force on July 1, 1998. He attended Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base and then entered tech training to become an Aircraft Maintenance Specialist. His first assignment was the 16th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, Hurlburt Field, Fla. In June 2002, Crate cross trained into the Combat Control career field and was then assigned to the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron, Hurlburt Field, Fla. SSgt Casey Crate was on his first operational deployment when on May 30, 2005, the Comp Air 7 aircraft he and three other Special Operations personnel and one Iraqi Air Force member were flying in, crashed in east central Iraq.
