Sergeant Oscar Garcia, a Marine recruiter for Fairbanks, Alaska, stands by two Bowhead Whale Skulls and the “Welcome to Barrow” sign, written in native Inupiaq, a local language spoken by the Inupiat people who live in this Arctic tundra, at the top of the world. Garcia is one of the few Marines on recruiting duty in Alaska, the largest state in the United States with an area of 663,268 square miles. One of only six Marine recruiters in Alaska, Garcia often travels to Barrow in recruiting efforts tasked with recruiting intelligent, qualified applicants in the least populated and largest recruiting area of operations – a testament to the diversity of the Marine Corps’ mission and the vastness of its duties.
