Kate Marshall (center left), a York High School sophomore and Varsity soccer and lacrosse player, holds her Sports Illustrated “High School Athlete of the Month” award while Chris Stone, managing editor of SI, speaks about the significance of the award, during half-time of a basketball game, Dec. 18. The high school athlete award program is hosted by the United States Marine Corps and presented to Marshall by Marines of Recruiting Station Portsmouth, N.H. Marshall was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis only eight months after birth, a disease that hardens mucus in the chest and leads to troubled breathing and infection. Marshall requires daily treatment for her condition, yet drives herself to live a normal life and uses sports as a therapeutic outlet.
