Petty Officer 1st Class Brian Garfield, a postal clerk assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Essex, works with Philippine sailors to move supplies at Barretto National High School during a community service project. During the project, Essex Sailors performed repair work, played educational games with the children and delivered books donated by the freshmen class at E.J. King High School at Commander, Fleet Activities Sasebo, Japan. Essex is participating in Balikatan 2009, an annual combined, joint-bilateral exercise involving U.S. military and armed forces of the Philippines personnel as well as subject matter experts from Philippine Civil Defense Agencies.
