A Marine Corps birthday cake is cut with a noncommissioned officer sword Nov. 7 at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, during a celebration of the Marine Corps’ 239th birthday. Marines with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, MCAS Futenma, Marine Corps Installations Pacific-Marine Corps Base Camp Butler, Japan, participated in a march lasting 239 minutes, with every minute representing a year of the Marine Corps’ existence. After the march, the Marines celebrated with a traditional cake cutting ceremony, in which the oldest Marine passed a piece of cake to the youngest Marine, signifying the passing down of experience and knowledge from generation to generation.
