Navy Junior Reserve Officers Corps (NJROTC) cadets learn how to fly Cessna airplanes using flight computer simulators at the Naval Station Great Lakes Learning Center June 17. The cadets from NJROTC Area 3 units across eight states were attending the annual NJROTC Leadership Academy. More than 140 cadets from 55 high schools in Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and West Virginia, took part in the week-long event. Other states, including Kentucky, Virginia and California, also traveled to Great Lakes to attend the academy that trains soon-to-be high school senior cadets to go back to their units and high schools, take charge and be the next leaders in their schools. Naval Service Training Command (NSTC) oversees more than 600 NJROTC units worldwide. NJROTC is a citizenship program that instills service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment in students in United States secondary educational institutions.
