Staff Sgt. Valerie Wofford currently serves as a Marine Corps drill instructor with November Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C. Wofford joined the Marine Corps in June 2004 and became a drill instructor in February 2012. “I became a drill instructor to better the quality of young women entering the Marine Corps,” said Wofford, a 28-year-old native of Phillipsburg, Kan. About 600 Marine Corps drill instructors shape the approximately 20,000 recruits who come to Parris Island annually into basic United States Marines.
