Deep-sea explorer and underwater archaeologist Dr. Robert Ballard, right, best known for his discovery of the RMS Titanic, meets with Dr. Frank Herr, department head of the Ocean Battlespace Sensing Office at the Office of Naval Research (ONR), during a visit to ONR in Arlington, Va. Ballard later spoke to ONR military and civilian personnel about the future of deep sea exploration and its application for the fleet. ONR's long-term investments in deep submergence technology, Remotely Operated Vehicle design, Unmanned Undersea Vehicle prototypes and autonomy have paid off for Ballard. Ballard's 42-year relationship with ONR began when he reported to the Boston Branch Office in 1967 as an ensign in the U.S. Navy. (U.S. Navy photo by John F. Williams/Released)
