Dr. Robert M. Browning, Jr., Chief of the U.S. Coast Guard Historian's Office, and Daniel J. Basta, Director of the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, review and sign a memorandum of agreement to preserve and to manage the underwater wreck of the Diamond Shoals Lightship on Sept. 18, 2014, in Norfolk, Virginia. The document formalizes a partnership in which NOAA will oversee the protection of and the public outreach for the former Coast Guard lightship, which was sunk by a German submarine off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, on August 6, 1918, after transmitting a radio warning about the U-Boat's presence.
