Salvador Coronel, a Chicago native who serves with the 1413th Engineer Company (Vertical), Indiana National Guard, which is attached to the 315th Engineer Battalion, learns to cut metal with a torch on Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, Sept. 9. Coronel is a horizontal construction engineer, who typically handles heavy equipment, and therefore had to learn on the job to perform the duties of a vertical engineer, which is to construct and dismantle structures.
