Corey Collier, the commanding officer of 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, and Maj. Thomas Siverts, the executive officer of 1st Bn., 9th Marines, inspect the battalion during the unit’s deactivation ceremony aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C., Aug. 29, 2014. While only approximately 230 Marines remained in the battalion at the time of the ceremony, many of its former members stood in formation to give the unit a proper send off.
