Rct. Gabrial Manning, Platoon 3073, India Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, rolls his sleeves July 21, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. Each recruits’ equipment must be packed, marked and stored a specific way. Drill instructors spent the first three days with their recruits teaching basic procedures and expectations. The formal 70-day training schedule begins about a week after recruits arrive on Parris Island; recruits spend the first week in-processing. Manning, 18, from Winter, Fla., is scheduled to graduate Oct. 10, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
