Brig. Gen. Douglas Gabram, the Combined Joint Task Force-1 deputy commanding general, places the 1st Cavalry Division patch onto the sleeve of the CJTF-1 commander, Maj. Gen. Michael Bills during a combat patch ceremony at Kandahar Airfield, Aug. 1. Combat patch ceremonies mark the formal acknowledgement of a Soldier's right to wear their unit patch on their right sleeve, signifying their service with a unit while deployed to a hostile area. The 1st Cavalry Division Headquarters is deployed to Kandahar Airfield, leading the transition from combat operations in Southern Afghanistan to a mission to train, advise, and assist the Afghan Security Forces.
