John R. Bruning, prolific military and aviation historian, talked about military history during an officer professional development class focusing on adaptive leadership development with Leaders and Soldiers from 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, at Provider Chapel in Fort Carson, Colo., July 11, 2014. Col. Robert T. Ault, commander, and Command Sgt. Maj. Antoine Duchatelier Jr., command sergeant major, both from 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, presented a brigade coin and a certificate of appreciation to Bruning. Bruning talked about innovative and adaptive leaders that helped turn the momentum for the United States during World War II. “Col. Paul Irvin "Pappy" Gunn whom was a United States naval aviator known mainly for his actions in the Second World War as an officer in the United States Army Air Forces. He was known as ‘an expert in dare-devil low-level flying,’” said Bruning. “Gunn was recognized for numerous feats of heroism and mechanical ingenuity, especially modifications to the Douglas A-20 Havoc light bomber and B-25 Mitchell medium bomber that turned them into attack aircraft. Gunn was sought after by Gen. George Churchill Kenney for his mechanical and weapon ingenuity.” “George Churchill Kenney whom was a United States Army Air Forces general during World War II,” added Bruning. “He is best known as the commander of the Allied Air Forces in the Southwest Pacific Area. Kenney assumed command of the Allied Air Forces and Fifth Air Force in General Douglas MacArthur's Southwest Pacific Area. Under Kenney's command, the Allied Air Forces developed innovative command structures, weapons, and tactics that reflected Kenney's orientation towards attack aviation. The new weapons and tactics won perhaps his greatest victory, the Battle of the Bismarck Sea, in March 1943.” “Both Gunn and Kenney were adaptive leaders taking what they learned and used it to think ‘outside the box’ to get an advantage over the enemy,” said Bruning. “What could have got them in trouble, actually made them heroes in U.S. history.” Bruning is the author of six books, including Outlaw Platoon (with Sean Parnell, William Morrow 2012), which he was embedded with one of Ault’s previous units. Bruning has also consulted for museums in both the U.S. and Europe, and for computer companies such as Sierra Online and Microsoft. He has helped produce more than a dozen historical documentaries.
