Lance Cpl. Rob Govitz (left), a Lapeer, Mich., native and geospatial intelligence analyst with 2nd Intelligence Battalion, II Marine Expeditionary Force, pulls a fellow Marine into his Zodiac boat at Camp Pendleton, Calif., July 15, 2014. The battalion’s Marines surveyed underwater terrain off several beaches at the base by using positioning, sonar and depth finding equipment. The exercise tested the team’s ability to travel beyond their base of operations at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and conduct detailed surveys in aquatic environments. The Marines teamed up with members of the Navy’s Naval Oceanography Special Warfare Command during the training as a way to collaborate and share lessons learned from their respective programs. Their successful deployment of the survey program to California helped prove their concept has the potential to reach out and support Marine units in various training and operational environments in the future.
