Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island

Rct. Lydia Domsitz, Platoon 4028, Oscar Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, walks through a pond after falling from a Confidence Course obstacle June 18, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits must use strength, balance and courage to complete the course’s 15 obstacles. The course was designed to physically and mentally challenge recruits and build self-confidence. Recruits like Domsitz, an 18-year-old native of Brookville, Ohio, attempt the course again later in training. Oscar Company is scheduled to graduate Aug. 22, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. Vaniah Temple)
