Rct. Matthew Montgomery, an 18-year-old native of Chatham, Ohio, is currently training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., in hopes of earning the title of United States Marine. Montgomery is training with Platoon 1060, Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, and is scheduled to graduate Aug. 29, 2014. “I joined the Marine Corps because I wanted a challenge. I’ve always been challenged intellectually but never mentally and physically,” said Montgomery, who is a 2014 graduate of Cloverleaf High School in Lodi, Ohio. “I’ve always felt a duty to serve my country as well because I feel I owe my country for everything it’s given me.” Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Octavia Davis)
