Philippine Army Col. Ronald Villanueva, right, chief-of-staff of 7th Infantry Division, and U.S. Army Col. Robert McDowell, commanding officer of Joint Special Operations Task Force – Philippines, participate in a wreath-laying ceremony May 10 at the Pangatian War Memorial in Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija, Philippines, during exercise Balikatan 2014. The ceremony honored Philippine and U.S. soldiers interred at the Cabanatuan Prison Camp, some of whom were liberated by Philippine guerrillas and the U.S. Army’s 6th Ranger Battalion during a raid Jan. 30, 1945. Balikatan is an annual bilateral training exercise between the Philippines and U.S. designed to foster cooperation and interoperability between the two nations’ armed forces through training as well as humanitarian aid and disaster relief projects.
