Deborah Benson, a drill instructor for Platoon 4016, November Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, shouts through a culvert to her recruits as they advance through a combat training course April 29, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. Drill instructors such as Benson, a 25-year-old from Lynn, Mass., supervise recruits as they move through the course, making corrections and providing encouragement. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
