An Iraqi policeman stands security in the marketplace in downtown Ramadi, June 9, 2008. The surge of 30,000 U.S. troops to Iraq allowed the Marines to focus a great deal on training the Iraqi security forces. The purpose of the training was to get the forces to a professional level so they can take control of their city. The results were successful as the city is being patrolled daily by the Iraqi Police with the Marines only serving as mentors to the maturing force. "There were just a few Iraqi policemen in 2006," Dostal said. "As a matter of fact, I was shocked when I went into the city recently. I heard the city had changed, but I was still amazed to see the Iraqi police and people out and about in the city driving around. The Iraqi policemen are definitely out there controlling their city and they're doing a heck of a job doing it."
