The Corps' corporals and sergeants just got a little bit tougher with the introduction of the new Tactical Small Unit Leaders Course, geared toward non-combat-arms Marines, to be held here starting, Oct. 20, 2008. Just as each Marine lieutenant learns provisional infantry platoon leading skills in The Basic School, the Advanced Infantry Training Center's TSULC teaches every NCO, corporal or sergeant, the basics behind leading teams and squads of Marines in combat. The first two classes are "Combat Mindset" and "Team Squad Training." Then students learn every weapon organic to the infantry, including how it should be deployed. Then they complete a live-fire shoot, move and communicate course, which is a team assault on a fixed objective. They live-fire qualify on every weapon and pass practical application on many integral pieces of military equipment, from Blue Force Trackers to PRC-119 radios. And they have to demonstrate a thorough enough understanding to teach the subject to someone else. So graduates can go back and train their own unit's Marines.
