A military drill instructor wearing a campaign cover (drill sergeant hat) and tan uniform addresses a large group of recruits seated on the floor of a military barracks. The recruits are wearing woodland camouflage uniforms and appear to be responding vocally, likely reciting or responding to commands. The setting is a large open bay barracks with bunk beds and rifles visible in the background.

Recruits of Platoon 3033, Mike Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, respond to orders given by their newly introduced senior drill instructor, Sgt. Domenick Distano, on March 1, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. Distano, 27, from Branchburg, N.J., promised to train his recruits to the best of his ability and to not give up on them, even when the recruits may give up on themselves. Mike Company is scheduled to graduate May 23, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Caitlin Brink)
