Haitian families receive food and fresh water from U.N. officials during relief efforts in areas of Haiti devastated by recent hurricanes. The amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge is airlifting food and supplies to flooded areas of Gonaives where roads are inaccessible. America's contributions to the relief efforts are being coordinated by the United States Agency for International Development and its Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance. Kearsarge has been diverted from the scheduled Continuing Promise 2008 humanitarian assistance deployment in the western Caribbean to conduct hurricane relief operations in Haiti.
