The remnants of Hurricane Ike that smashed the Texas coastline, on Sept. 12, 2008, dumped over 10 inches of rain on several northwestern Indiana counties causing lake, rivers, tributaries and levies to spill over their banks and cause massive flooding. On Sept. 16, 2008, members of the Indiana Army National Guard 113th Engineer Battalion tossed thousands of sand bags on to failing levies in Gary, Indiana, to help shore them up and stop further flooding.
