Staff Sgt. Michael Zacniewski II, a drill instructor for Platoon 3009, India Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, speaks with his recruits Dec. 10, 2013, as they finish another training day on Parris Island, S.C. Zacniewski, 32, from Philadelphia, spoke with his recruits about the obstacles they faced that day and the importance of never stopping their self-improvement. Drill instructors mentor recruits throughout training to help develop their character. India Company is scheduled to graduate Feb. 14, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
