Rct. Joseph Afanador, Platoon 3098, Lima Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, repeats the oath of enlistment Dec. 7, 2013, during an emblem ceremony on Parris Island, S.C. Upon completion of the Crucible, the 54-hour culminating event of training, each recruit finally earned the Eagle, Globe and Anchor emblem and was called Marine for the first time, making this the defining moment of the past 12 weeks of training. Afanador, 18, from Sharon, Pa., is scheduled to graduate Dec. 13, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Caitlin Brink)
