Players from the Southern University football team carry a fellow teammate on a stretcher during a training exercise conducted by the Marines Feb. 22, 2013. The Marines put the Jaguars through training similar to that which the Marines commonly use to help build teamwork and camaraderie amongst its combat units to help the team prepare for the 2013 football season. The Jaguar players were forced to work as a team to complete many of the exercises. The Marines had the Jags crawling through the mud, hefting around logs and flipping large industrial-sized tires throughout the training. Jaguars head coach Dawson Odum said the training was foundational to the Jaguars successful season. Odum emphasized the importance of the training with the Marines at a press conference for the Bayou Classic Nov. 26, 2013. The Bayou Classic has showcased the long-standing rivalry between the Southern University Jaguars and the Gambling State University Tigers for 39 years. The United States Marine Corps has been a partner of the Bayou Classic for 13 consecutive years in celebration of the hard work, courage and commitment to excellence exhibited by its many participants.
