U.S. Army Pfc. Jesus Barron is focused on the entrance to the building his squadron is staging-in at Nangalam base, Sept. 11. The Nogales Ariz., native serves as a machine gunner, 3rd Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment. Barron joined the Army about two years ago and is on his her first deployment. “The machine gunner is one of the most important elements of the platoon, providing a broader view of the battlefield, allowing the gunner to protect the entire element,” said Barron. 3rd Squadron is at Nangalam to support their Afghan counterparts in securing the route to Chapa Dara’s District center.
