Sgt. Mallory Ortiz currently serves as a Marine Corps drill instructor with November Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C. Ortiz joined the Marine Corps in April 2008 and became a drill instructor in March 2013. "Based on my experiences in the Marine Corps, I wanted to be a part of shaping the new generation of female Marines. It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be selfless every single second of every single minute of every single day to train these recruits to become United States Marines," said
Ortiz, a native of Medford, Mass. About 600 Marine Corps drill instructors shape the approximately 20,000 recruits who come to Parris Island annually into basically training United States Marines. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. MaryAnn Hill)
