Rct. Maria Villarreal and Rct. Paula Valerio, both with Platoon 4038, November Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, carry ammunition cans during a physical training session Sept. 17, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. These training sessions are meant to prepare recruits for the physical and combat fitness tests, both of which must be passed before graduating. Villarreal, a 19-year-old native of Ozona, Texas, and Valerio, a 19-year-old Los Angeles native, are scheduled to graduate Nov. 15, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. MaryAnn Hill)
