U.S. Army Capt. James Balloch, of Glastonbury, Conn., the forward support medevac platoon leader with the Medevac Platoon “Dustoff,” Company C, 3rd Battalion, 238th Aviation Regiment, Task Force Dragon, sits in his crew’s UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter after a hoist training exercise at Forward Operating Base Fenty, Nangarhar province, Afghanistan, Sept. 16, 2013. Medevac teams provide emergency care to U.S. and Coalition Forces, and transport patients by air to medical treatment facilities. Using a hoist allows medevac crews to raise and lower supplies and personnel into remote or treacherous areas where landing the aircraft is impossible. (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Sgt.
