A group of tourists or visitors stands in a courtyard surrounded by densely packed, multi-story traditional buildings with wooden balconies and railings, consistent with Newari architecture found in Kathmandu, Nepal. The buildings show signs of age and wear, with laundry hanging from balconies and vegetation growing on structures. Several people are gathered in the open courtyard area, appearing to be on a guided tour or site visit.

Marines from the III Marine Expeditionary Force participated in a Vulnerability Tour/Earthquake Walk Sept. 9 as part of the Pacific Resilience Disaster Response Exercise and Exchange field training exercise. The purpose of the vulnerability tour was to familiarize participants with different building typologies, observe the evolution of various urban developments and vulnerabilities that currently exist, as well as identify existing resources which could be invaluable during a disaster. The National Society for Earthquake Technology – Nepal conducted the tour. Pacific Resilience brings together civilian and military personnel from the United States and Nepal, as well as international stakeholders, to discuss emergency management, preparedness and response measures to an earthquake impacting Kathmandu Valley.
