Several crew members that were on board the USS Missouri during the signing of the Instrument of Surrender and the artists that created the statue take part in a traditional Hawaiian blessing for the nine-foot bronze sculpture of Fleet Adm. Chester Nimitz. Nimitz, the commander in chief for the U.S. Pacific Fleet from Dec. 31, 1941, to Nov. 24, 1945, was in charge of Naval forces that lead to victory in the Pacific.
