Cmdr. Kenneth Kubis, director of surgical services, explains the functions of the operating room to Miss Universe contestants during their tour of the Military Sealift Command hospital ship USNS Mercy. Mercy is anchored off the coast of Nha Trang, conducting its second mission site in support of Pacific Partnership 2008. This is the first time since 1975 that the Vietnamese government has allowed their citizens to receive surgery aboard a U.S. military vessel. The mission involves partnerships with the armed forces of Vietnam, Vietnamese health care professionals, and local government officials.
