Gunnery Sgt. Erick Valez, platoon sergeant, Charlie Company, 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, and native of San Diego, mans the turret on an amphibious assault vehicle during a nighttime beach landing here, Aug. 25, 2013. The nighttime landing was the first phase in the four day training exercise were the Marines honed their amphibious and combat capabilities. The Marines performed the exercise in preparation for their upcoming deployment to Okinawa, Japan, where they will support joint operations in the Pacific.
