The Battle of Belleau Wood was a turning point in United States Marine Corps history. Prior to World War I, the Marine Corps was a small but vital fighting force structured for expeditionary and maritime security. The establishment of the 4th Marine Brigade in France in October of 1917 set the course for the Corps to enter the era of modern warfare at Belleau Wood. The valor and devotion exhibited by the Marines at Belleau Wood would come to strike fear in our enemies and pride in our fellow Americans. After World War I, our Corps grew by tens of thousands of Marines; the reputation Marines forged at Belleau Wood would make our name synonymous with the fiercest fighting force in the world. It is important that we take time, as we do every Memorial Day, to remember the sacrifice of our fellow Marines during this historic battle. show less
