FORT LEE, Va. (Oct. 6, 2006) – The mystery events planned for the last day of the 5th annual NCO/Soldier of the Year "Best Warrior" competition were completed as planned, with one exception. The ruck march, which was scheduled for early in the morning, had to be cancelled because of the torrential rain that started Friday morning.

The other scheduled events that were completed included a medevac mission, a combatives tournament, room clearing, crew served weapons assembly and computerized situational scenarios.

Staff Sgt. Douglas W. Norman, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Hunter Army Airfield, Savannah, Ga., a native of Casper, Wyo. was the NCO division combative champion while Sgt. Bryan D. Waddy, 32nd Army Air & Missile Defense Command, Fort Bliss, Texas, a native of Philadelphia earned the same title for the Soldier division.

Sgt. Maj. of the Army Kenneth O. Preston was at the events and spent time observing and speaking with the Soldiers.

One of the questions Preston asked of the Soldiers was what they thought of the competition as a whole.

Spc. Edward A. Hull, 2nd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR), Fort Campbell, Ky. a native of North Platte, Neb. said, "I enjoyed it because of my specialty with my aviation MOS and what-not, it is vitally important for me to get to do some of the stuff that the boots on the ground are doing all the time."

When Preston asked Staff Sgt. Stacy-Lyn D. De La Hoz if she thought she would be announced as the winner of the competition, she said, " honestly, I don't care if I win this competition or not. I'm still going to walk away having had one of the greatest experiences ever."

During the combatives tournament, Sgt. Corey E. Luffler, 1st Battalion, 15th Field Artillery, Camp Hovey, Korea, a native of Pickerington, Ohio jokingly said that he should just tap out during the championship bout against his buddy Sgt. Waddy. But he quickly shouted out to everyone present, "just kidding. I will never quit."

Neither he, nor any of the other nineteen participants did.

The winner of the competition will be announced on Monday, Oct. 10 at the AUSA convention in Washington, D.C. after a weekend of well deserved rest.
